Matt, a plumber by trade, grew up on a farm helping his Dad tinker with all kinds of machines. Wendy, the business manager for a group of radio stations, had no mechanical experience. We started watching Battlebots on TV when it came on after South Park and thought it looked cool.

November 2001: we attended the final day of the Battlebots season 4.0 competition on Treasure Island. That night, Matt began designing a heavyweight robot to take into battle!
The original design was a two-wheel bot with horizontal spinning blades front and back. Two wheels were increased to four for greater stability and easier driving. The back weapon was changed to an invertible wedge after watching some of the incredible destructive power of the weapons at the May 2002 Battlebots competition.
While working on the plywood prototype, we thought the robot looked like an animal and came up with the name "Badger". Here's the Badger taking a friend for a spin....
